How do you calculate post and rail fencing?

To calculate the number of posts required, divide the total length in metres of the boundary by 1.8 (post centres) and add 1 post at the end. To calculate the number of rails required, divide the total meterage required by 3.6 (rail length) and multiply the number by 3 (for three rail fencing).

Round posts are cheaper but labour would increase …

So to fence 1 square acre 252 m in the style above. You would need

Excluding the cost of materials, the average cost to install fence and rail is £1,250 -£1,850 for labour. This price is subject to

• Number of rails

• Style of post 

• Do trees and hedges need trimming
